A FORMER house master at a Reigate school has appeared in court to face 27 charges of sexual abuse and neglect of children younger than 16.

Philip Ralph Batten, 69, now of Caddock Hill in Battle, was formerly a house master at Royal Alexandra and Albert School.

He appeared at Guildford Crown Court today to face 4 charges of buggery on a child younger than 16; 21 charges of indecent assault on a child younger than 16 and two charges of assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, abandoning or exposing a person younger than 16 who he was responsible for.

The charges relate to the alleged abuse of nine children across more than a decade from 1974 – 1988.

Batten did not enter a plea. He was released on bail until July 24 with the conditions that he must not contact anyone who was at the school during that time and he must not be with a child younger than 16 without supervision and without them being aware of the allegations

Our abuse team at Verisona Law are already representing two individual who are pursuing claims in respect of alleged abuse suffered at the School and has successfully settled claims brought by others who also attended the School. He also assisted Sanchia Berg and Meirion Jones in the preparation of the BBC Panorama documentary.
