Maternity failings in Sheffield teaching hospital

May 25th, 2022

Despite being rated as ‘Inadequate’ and in need of urgent action by the CQC in June 2021, the article below has been released today by Yorkshire Live following mums opening up about their experiences on the Jessop Wing in Sheffield’s Teaching Hospital. Sadly experiences have included many mums feeling like basic standards of dignity and care have been lost, with reports of some being left naked and covered in bodily fluids for extended periods of time, pleas for pain relief being ignored, and mum’s having to share food.

A sadly familiar tale of understaffing and a bullying culture has also been revealed by some midwives. There are further worrying concerns re the imbalance of care potentially discriminating against those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. This is a further harrowing example of maternity care highlighted so shortly after the events at Shrewsbury.

How can we help?

We have decades of experience in obstetric cases involving catastrophic injuries and death to mothers and babies as a result of substandard maternity care in both the NHS and private practice. Please do get in touch if you have any concerns regarding care received at the Trust during your pregnancy and if you or your children have suffered any loss or damage as a result. Claims against the Trust can be brought up to 3 years after a death, or 3 years after the 18th birthday of a child.

In some cases there is in fact no time limit and we can advise you upon this.
