Former Warwickshire police officer cleared of six charges of sexually abusing teenagers

March 15th, 2019

Timothy Lively, a former Stratford police sergeant, has been cleared of six more allegations he had been facing at Warwick Crown Court.

Lively had denied a total of 26 charges for offences which took place between 1970 and 1986, when some of the allegations were first made.

The offences were alleged to have taken place in Stratford when Lively was a police officer and prior to that a cadet. He is now a successful businessman.

Lively had been accused of sexually assaulting eight boys. The assaults were alleged to have taken place at a Stratford police station, in a children’s home where he had volunteered and on camping trips. He had been accused of having sex with two of the boys, one at a boy’s club which he helped to run. The charges also included allegedly indecently assaulting three girls, and raping one of them.

At the trial, Lively has already been cleared of two charges of indecent assault in relation to one boy in 1979 and one charge of indecently assaulting a 15 year old boy on a camping trip in the early 1980s.

The jury has now also returned not guilty verdicts on six more of the charges, after deliberating for more than 50 hours over the course of nine days. Two of those charges related to alleged indecent assaults in the late 70s on a boy when he was aged 15 and 16, and another allegation of having sex with the boy when he was 16. Lively still faces two indecent assault charges in relation to that complainant.

Lively was also found not guilty of two charges of indecently assaulting another boy (again aged 15-16), at Stratford police station. He had already been cleared of indecently assaulting the same boy on a camping trip.

He had also been cleared of indecently assaulting a boy under the age of 16 at a children’s home in the early 80s.

There is a further allegation concerning that boy among charges the jury is still considering.

A complaint was first made in 1986 by a man who alleges he was abused in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Lively was dismissed from the force in 1988 following an internal tribunal concerning the man’s original complaint.

The case continues.
