Congregation of Christian Brothers

Ninian’s Falkland in Fife was run by the Christian Brothers, a worldwide religious community within the Catholic Church, between 1951 and 1983.  The Chairwoman of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry found that children were sexually abused, physically abused and emotionally abused.  It was found to be “a place of abuse and deprivation”.

In 2016 former headmaster, John Farrell, was convicted of three indecent assault charges and was jailed for five years but was acquitted of 18 charges.  At the same time Paul Kelly was jailed for ten years, having been convicted of seven charges albeit he was acquitted of 22 charges.  Both men were placed on the Sex Offenders Register.  Another monk, Brother Ryan, died in July 2013 before he could be investigated.
