William Henry Smith School - WHSS - Merrick re-trial 11 September 2012

FORMER assistant headteacher accused of sexually abusing four pupils at a West Yorkshire residential school will face a second trial tomorrow. Peter Merrick, 66, was cleared last month of one allegation of indecent assault, but a jury at Bradford Crown Court failed to reach verdicts in relation to 21 other charges. Merrick, of Burton Road, Overseal, Derbyshire, had denied all 22 charges which relate to his time at the William Henry Smith School near Brighouse in the late 1970s and 1980s. The prosecution alleged during an 11-day trial that Merrick had sexually abused four male pupils between 1977 and 1984 while he was working at the school for boys with behavioural problems. Judge Peter Benson was told yesterday that the prosecution had decided to seek a second trial on the allegations and a date was fixed for tomorrow, September 11 2012. We would like to hear from anyone affected by this story or other similar abuse please contact us in the strictest of confidence. We act for a number of individuals who are pursuing the William Henry Smith School for alleged physical and sexual abuse. Charles Derham crd@verisona.com 02392492472

"I would like to express my profound heartfelt gratitude to Lisa Gafarov for all her hard work and understanding when representing me. She fought passionately for my case for two years.

Within this time, never once did I feel it was about the money for her. She was very considerate and dealt with many personal matters in a caring and professional way. It was a very sensitive case but she put in a lot of hard work and went the extra mile each time. Her wide range of expertise was indispensable during this difficult time. Because of this I trusted all her advice and as a result, this took a lot of pressure off of me.

She managed to reach a very amicable conclusion between the defendants and myself. You don’t know how much your passion impacts the lives of others. For this I am forever grateful. I would recommend your firm a hundred times over."
