Individuals urged to assist in investigations – Winton House

We continue to deal with a number of physical and sexual abuse claims against the presiding county council arising from abuse which took place during the 1970s at Winton House, in Winchester, a boarding school for boys. We are currently dealing with in 23 claims in relation to this particular school.

Children were commonly placed at Winton House either via the juvenile courts as a result of criminal proceedings or via care orders as a result of social services intervention. Winton House was divided into a system of individual houses, known as Castle, Wessex, & Purbrook, with separate dormitories for each house. Physical and sexual bullying between pupils within the individual houses raged unchecked. The regime at Winton House was grim due to the level of violence and the frequency of sexual misbehaviour.

Following a police investigation, criminal proceedings against Mr. Park, the gardener at Winton House in the early 1970s, resulted in five guilty convictions for indecent assault. The police owing to further individiausl coming forward have reopened the investigation and are making further enquiries.

Claims include damage for the actual assaults, and damages for psychiatric injuries in later life. The abuse may give rise to claims for loss of earnings, disadvantage on the open labour market, and cost of psychological therapy.
