Former police officer John Edward Bates jailed for abusing boys in Cambridgeshire

Former police officer branded "the Jimmy Savile of the scouting world" was today jailed for a series of historic sexual assaults on four young boys in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. John Edward Bates, 68, assaulted kids as young as 10, who he showed pornographic films and magazines to before abusing them during visits to his home in the 1970s and 80s. He denied 22 charges against him, claiming that the victims fabricated the evidence against him, but a jury found him guilty of 16 charges of indecent assault on a male person.

Unearthing historical crimes through the media

Last month, I wrote a blog about a child abuse case, where a man who worked at a school in the 80s ended up pleading guilty to a number of attacks on boys whilst working at the school (http://www.verisonalaw.com/news-item/prosecutors-terra-nova). Part of that story looked at how media coverage of the case themselves, was useful in encouraging people to come forward so that criminals can be brought to justice.
