Charities warned to stop using supporters' personal information for fundraising purposes

Two charities have this month, been fined large sums of money for what has become known as ‘Wealth Screening’. This involves passing the personal information of charity supporters on to third parties so that those third parties can then identify those considered to be wealthy enough to approach for more money.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has suggested that these activities and related practices (such as information swapping) could also be being carried out by other charities and investigations are ongoing.

This has led to the Charities Commission and the Fundraising Regulator issuing a joint alert to all charities about compliance. They have been warned that they should immediately cease such action and review their policies and procedures.

This no doubt will have an impact on the reputation of those charities involved, but it also highlights questionable fundraising practices in general.
